Last cycle games of console hardware often the best say game developers
Nic Fillingham from Microsoft and Harvey Smith from Midway had a few interesting points to make about the next generation of games at the press conference this morning.
With the recent launch of all the new game consoles, someone wanted to know what the next generation of consoles looks like?
Harvey made the point that they are just figuring out what the new software capabilities are on the latest release consoles and the second generation of games is bound to be bigger and better. It’s easier to take games to their full potential at the end of the hardware cycle he said.
Nic said the real growth in software was in developing the integration of user-generated content and he thought the X-Box was a great foundation for that. Interesting given how closed off they remain to game developers. UGC is something that is likely to grow out of PC based gaming.
PC gaming evangelist Keita Lida from NVIDIA said PC gaming has a huge future and is far ahead of console-based games graphically.
He said the next big devlopments for PC games are:
- More motion and more emotion – as people become more involved in the games the need for real emotional expression becomes more.
- Genre blending (MMO first person shooting).
- More cinematic games so they become more like interactive movies. For example the ability to zoom and focus in on one character as you are playing.
The PC is more powerful than the console said Lida and there’s a lot more innovation on the graphics front. But I’ll leave it up to the fanboys to battle that one out☺
